My first sale was a contemporary romance co-authored with the late Sandra Canfield in 1983 for Silhouette Books. NO PERFECT SEASON was so popular, it was later reissued as a Silhouette Classic. Sandra and I wrote four books together and sold two of them. After we went our separate ways, I wrote for several imprints, including Silhouette Intimate Moments, Silhouette Special Editions and Harlequin Superromance. I was a contributor to three continuity series during that time: the award winning "Calloway Corners" series written with friends Sandra Canfield, Tracy Hughes (Terri Blackstock of Zondervan fame) and Katherine Burton. The series won the Romantic Times "Lifetime Achievement Award" and was listed in a collection of "milestones and favorites" that included FOREVER AMBER, GONE WITH THE WIND, and LAURA.
I contributed 2 books (PASSIONATE KISSES and UNANSWERED PRAYERS) to the 24 book "Crystal Creek" series set in Crystal Creek, Texas. Because Harlequin got so much mail about how the book helped readers, UNANSWERED PRAYERS was reissued as part of the launch when Silhouette started the Steeple Hill inspirational imprint. The book was a finalist in the Inspirational category of the prestigious RITA competition sponsored by Romance Writers of America.
Because I love tying up all the loose ends of a series, I chose to write the final book for Harlequin's "Delta Justice" continuity series. My book, DESIRES AND DECEPTIONS made me a nominee for "Storyteller of the Year." I also wrote one mainstream title, DREAMERS AND DECEIVERS, for HarperPaperbacks. The book won the 1991 "Reader's Choice" award in the Single Title category.
I currently write historical inspirational romance for the Harlequin Love Inspired historical line. While the main focus of these books is still a romance, there are various degrees of Christian values and morality worked throughout the story. Subjects in these books deal with timeless problems and how they define the characters. I've dealt with unwed mothers, which in the 1880s was a very serious problem. I've also written about racial issues, spousal abuse, the damage plain old gossip can do to a reputation, and many other problems.
I recently signed with Kensington Publishing to write three historical mysteries for the upcoming Lilly Long Mystery series, about a Shakespearean actress who becomes a Pinkerton agent and uses her acting talents to solve crime. Mr. Allan Pinkerton hired the first female detective and often hired actresses. The books also explore use of the forensics of the time. Settings will range throughout the U.S., wherever Lilly's assignments take her and her reluctant partner, Andrew Cadence McShane, a fellow operative. In keeping with the tone of the series, all books will be titles with lines of Shakespeare. The first book, AN UNTIMELY FROST, is set in Illinois. Book Two, THOUGH THIS BE MADNESS takes Lilly to New Orleans, and book three, as yet untitled, will put them in the rough and tumble Texas town of Ft. Worth.
